SHALL I COMPARE YOU TO A SUMMER’S DAY? A Fun And Upbeat Love Song

This love song is inspired by the idea of being with someone so lovely, they remind you of a Summer’s day. It’s a fun idea and a fun theme for a song. The magic of Shakespeare is that once you think of such a person that you either have in your life or want in your life, that image doesn’t leave you. Sometimes it delights you from just thinking of such a person, and sometimes it haunts you if you don’t have such a person in your life.

This song is energetic, fun, and upbeat, but the main character laments how they only see such a person in their dreams and wishes, but not next to them. It has a little bit of tension and sentimentality too. It’s not always great. If you enjoy that kind of tension and nuance in music, you might enjoy my list of sad love songs from different artists across different eras and genres of music.

Best Song Lyrics

Since “Shall I compare you to a Summer’s day?” is one of the best lines in all of Shakespeare, it must absolutely be one of the greatest song lyrics of all time, which is why I added this song in my collection of songs with the best song lyrics. Additionally, since the metaphor of a lady who is like a Summer’s day is so powerful, I added it to my collection of songs with great metaphors.

This Love Song Is Fun And Upbeat

Many love song are sappy and saccharine, simply professing the singer’s love. This song does not take that route. Instead, its melody is fun, and the song’s feel is fun and uptempo. It’s almost inviting the listener to come on a fun adventure.

In the middle of writing this upbeat love song, as I was starting to play around with the melody, and early recording drafts of this song, I decided to autotune my voice, which I have not done in any of my other songs. The auto-tuning helps to make the melody more dynamic, and gave the song more of a range, and turned it into even more of an upbeat love song.

Additionally, some of the moments of the song are fun like this lyric:

I woke up to reach for you

Just to feel a breeze that blew-hoo-hoo.

Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18 – I  read

And believed everything he said.

Catchy Chorus

Here is the main part of the chorus:

Shall I compare you to a Summer’s day?

You are more lovely in every way.

When these two lines are performed in theater or at poetry readings, they are usually said solemnly. The auto-tuning in the song helps to make it more of a legato sound, making this moment in the song more catchy.

Your perfume drifts my way.

The breeze blows your perfume my way

To gift you these words, I’d be unafraid.

You change the hues of fate.

BRIDGE

Some think that Shakepeare’s old and done.

But through his magic he lives on.

He’s trying to whisper in your ear.

He first said everything we hear.

VERSE 4

Wish I penned Sonnet 18.

You’d emerge through a  smoke screen.

I’d write you into history with my quill

Oh the blank pages you’d fill.

VERSE 5

Fantasies fade I am afraid.

But thy eternal summer will not fade,

In eternal time you grow:

So long as men can breathe and eyes can see,

So long lives this, and this gives life to…thee.

CHORUS 4

Shall I compare thee to a Summer’s day?

You are more lovely in every

Way – hey hey hey hey.

If only, if only you’d stay.
