MICHELANGELO – Romantic Song About Michelangelo’s Painting “Creation of Adam”

This is a new romantic song that transcends time, space, history, religion, and art mediums. It takes Michelangelo’s painting Birth of Adam, and focuses on the close-up of the touch between God and Adam. The song ignores God and Adam, and focuses on the romance and the depth of humanity of a connection between two people.

In the song, the touch represents souls connecting on a personally meaningful level rather than necessarily a religious level. There are two ways to listen to the song. One way is to see how two lovers use touch to get close. In the second verse, this is especially poignant with these lyrics.

My fingers gliding along your silhouette.

You’re breathing with me – our souls have met.

Our eyes close as my fingers track

New Sistine Chapels along your back.

This is one of the most poetic and beautiful lines I’ve ever written. I wrote this line a while ago, and still think back to it, wondering how I came up with words like “My fingers track new Sistine Chapels along your back.” When I started writing poetry, my dream was to write lines like these, so as the author, this is extremely satisfying.

The song then goes on to bring back focus on Michelangelo and his painting, challenging him that he painted the wrong painting because he should have painted myself and my romantic partner of the song in that painting. After that, the song goes into the bridge which also features otherworldly and ethereal imagery and poetry:

And we surrender in ethereal sublime

Where souls touch and forever intertwine.

With hearts in heaven while still on earth below

We’ll paint the world better than Michelangelo.

What Makes This Romantic Song That Stands Out

Most romantic songs today are written in a non-poetic and literal way. The lyrics and plot are typically predictable. It’s either a breakup with someone not answering the other person’s text, or some exultation of the romantic partner with very literal language and non-original imagery. This song is almost a throwback to the time of the 60s when songwriters wrote real poetry that didn’t reek of the corporate mass-market reduction.

Parallels Between The Original Painting And The Modern Interpretation

The last verse of the song starts with “Moments or centuries later, we open our eyes. We’ve levitated, I realize.” In the original painting, God and Adam are shown levitating too. Also, as the author, I am glad I snuck in the lyric of “moments or centuries later” because it’s literally been centuries since the original painting was painted, yet it also feels like it’s not an outdated painting, and it’s humanity is fully relevant today.

Modern Soft Rock – Musical Style Of This Song

The style of this song is somewhere between soft rock and folk rock. The song features a full instrumental arrangement that builds in energy as the song goes on. It features both, acoustic and electric guitars. It’s perhaps only slightly reminiscent of classic rock, and may be best described as light rock.

A Romantic Song That Transcends Time And History

The Michelangelo song is written about a Renaissance painting, but puts the actors in the Renaissance painting in a modern setting. The lyrics mention Michelangelo, but the main focus point is the modern artist or romantic partner who repaints the original strokes of a new kind of love that’s gentle, kind, and bountiful that fits today.

Full Lyrics For This New Romantic Song

VERSE 1

Poets go mad describing the light you emanate.

For centuries they broke their quills, and now it’s my fate.

But I can paint you worlds with my caress.

So I touch the back of your shoulder as you undress.

CHORUS

Oh Michelangelo, painted God and Adam in the sky.

Oh Michelangelo, in the painting, I see my love and I.

VERSE 2

My fingers gliding along your silhouette.

You’re breathing with me – our souls have met.

Our eyes close as my fingers track

New Sistine Chapels along your back.

CHORUS

Oh Michelangelo, painted God and Adam in the sky.

Oh Michelangelo In the painting, I see my love-and-I.

His brush didn’t show her glory.

I’ll guide his hand to repaint it with her and I in the story.

BRIDGE

And we surrender in ethereal sublime.

Where souls touch and forever intertwine.

With hearts in heaven while still on earth below.

We’ll paint the world better than Michelangelo.

VERSE 3

Moments or centuries later – I open my eyes.

We levitated in our touch – I realize.

Each day in our flight I find new words to express

That feel as though they were a caress.
